The Better ‘mester?

In response to COVID-19, schools across Ontario implemented new regulations to keep our communities safe. One of the many variations of schedules was the change between semesters and quadmesters. From September 2021-January 2022, we were in the quadmester system with two classes a day, for 150 minutes each. This allowed for fewer people in isolation if they were deemed to be “close contacts” of a positive case. However, starting in February 2022, the schedule changed back to the traditional four periods a day semester model. Quadmesters were definitely something new for everyone and it turns out many students actually preferred the quadmesters over semesters for a few different reasons.

“Quadmesters are better because you can just focus on just two things which is less exhausting,”

says Lauren Weldon Vaughb. Calista Steele agrees and says,

“the day went by faster and there was less work with quadmesters. You only have to concentrate on two things.”

On the other hand, other students definitely do prefer the semester system. One of the main reasons being they prefer shorter classes, more time to complete assignments, and more time to retain the information being taught. Payton LaPolice agrees with this point of view when she says,

“there’s less class time so it’s easier to focus because you aren’t doing the same thing for two and a half hours. Also during a semester, you don’t have to learn a unit in a day which is nice.”

Anthony Bengsston makes a similar point by saying,

“the day is more spread out. Quadmester classes were too long. With the semester, I feel like I’m in actual high school.”

Each of the different schedules has its fair share of pros and cons. They are both efficient in their own ways and, depending on someone’s learning style, one may be more suitable than the other. While everyone has their own preferences on the schedule, it’s back to semesters we go!
