Why do we run for Terry Fox every year? There’s a simple and sad reason. Around 18.1 million people were diagnosed with or were living with cancer in 2020 across the globe, and we raise funds with the hope for a cure. Terry Fox, an eighteen-year-old cancer fighter, attempted to run across Canada in 1980 to raise much-needed money for cancer research. His Marathon of Hope spread a message across the country that we needed to put more effort into the research of this disease. His foundation has raised $850 million so far, and every dollar counts towards another research project to help many people's lives with medical advancements. Terry Ran for 143 days, logging over 5,300 kilometres, on a prosthetic leg, even when it rained. Sadly, his journey was cut short in Thunder Bay when doctors realized the cancer had spread to his lungs. Terry wasn’t able to finish his run, so we run for him and to continue his legacy.
This is what Sacred Heart did on Wednesday, September 28th. It was our turn to acknowledge his strength by running/walking around our school track and the Canadian trail for an hour or so, raising money for cancer research. Students in Grades 7-12 all participated, some walking, some running, and donated funds in their homeroom for cancer research, raising over 5,000 dollars on a goal on 2,000. Great work Huskies!
