Spirit Week and ROCK YOUR SOCKS!

Better than ever, Sacred Heart’s Spirit Week returns with new themes and daily announcements from the co-prez’s and Frosty to get the word out and the energy high. Beginning the week off strong with a “sponsored day,” meaning students wore clothes from only one brand (e.g. Nike, Gap, American Eagle, et cetera). Tuesday was “dress to unimpress”/ wacky clothes, and our school’s Chapelin was sporting a very bright and layered outfit, making him almost unrecognizable. Wednesday was Black and Yellow (Bee) day, inspired by the Spelling and Math Bee, in the theatre during high school lunch. Volunteers were picked from the crowd to answer alternating questions related to math or spelling, ranging from words like “Lithophage Meteorite” to math problems like “The mean (average) of two numbers is 7, and one is 5. What is the other number?” Taking advantage of the Spelling Bee, Lola and Marynna’s Relay for Life Team held a “Bee Bake sale” in front of the theatre. Throwing everyone back in time to mid-pandemic, Thursday was “zoom day,” and students got to return to their comfy on the bottom and professional on top looks. Finishing off the week strong with Culture day, everyone was encouraged to wear colours or traditional outfits from their culture, and a school potluck was held in the cafeteria at lunch. Janice Lazaro (11) was especially happy “to see so many people eager to eat Filipino food! I hope we have more opportunities to share our cultures with everyone!” In advance of the potluck, students signed up on the Google form from the student council's Instagram page to bring traditional cultural food in, and in return, they got to participate in the event! For example, some students brought in Pancit and Pork singang.

You may have heard of Down Syndrome, but do you really know what Down Syndrome is? When a child is born with an extra chromosome, the 21st chromosome, they develop the condition of Down Syndrome, which can delay the development of certain mental or physical skills, but it affects everyone differently. There are actually three types of Down Syndrome: Trisomy 21 (most common), Translocation Down Syndrome, and Mosaic Down Syndrome, but you would have to look at the chromosomes to identify the type. Only 3% of Down Syndrome in the world is hereditary. In the world currently, 1 in every 1,050 people has Down Syndrome, and 1 in every 800 people in Canada. Everyone that has Down Syndrome has a special talent that they are amazing at, just like everyone else! Sacred Heart even has its own coffee-selling business - “Brewed Awakenings” - led by the Inclusion program students, where coffee is sold to the teachers and brought to them on Fridays! In an interview with Chloe, a graduating Brewed Awakenings staff member and student at our school, she said that she’s “very excited for my acting program this summer” and she is going to be singing Hello by Beyonce in the talent show on Wednesday! Chloe also loves doing math and reading Nancy Drew books!
