Relay for Life was founded in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt, a cancer surgeon, who decided to walk around a track in Tacoma, Washington for 24 hours to raise awareness of cancer and
money for the American Cancer Society. That night alone he raised $33,750. Since then, Relay for Life has raised money all over the globe and it has been estimated that it has raised about 5 billion dollars in total.
Our friends at Virtual Academy have decided to keep the tradition of raising money for cancer this year through covid by hosting a virtual Relay for Life event. Students will be raising money with their class in hopes to reach their goal of $50,000 and as of today, they are already past the halfway mark! In the past, Sacred Heart participants would meet at the Oz Dome and, like Dr. Klatt, would walk together for 12 hours to raise money to donate to the Canadian Cancer Society. This year, even though we can't be physically together, we are going to be together in spirit as a community that supports each other. Dr. Gordy Klatt once said
"Throughout the years I have spoken and written about how cancer can personally affect everyone. It affects the rich, the poor, and all nationalities and cultures around the world.”
Cancer affects around 1 in every 2 Canadians at some point, and everyone should take the time to learn more about cancer and people can do to help make a difference. Whether it is walking around a track for 12 hours, taking the time to learn more about
cancer or donating money to Relay for Life or the Canadian Cancer Society, everything counts and makes a difference in someone's life. People that have fought cancer, or are fighting it right now, find so much hope in seeing people participating in Relay for Life because they are reminded that they are not alone in their battles.
