Sacred Hearts' very own debate club has been brought to life to educate our students about discussing important issues that face our generation and developing an important skill that many adults struggle with: public speaking. The debate club was started by Jaden Zhang, Jack Martin, Avery Lor, Harnake Reehal, Ryan Cornell, and Ahsan Ali. These grade 10 students started the club because they saw
“there was a void in the school that we believed we could fill by creating a welcoming space to voice opinions, build confidence, and learn how to debate properly,”
according to Jaden Zhang.
The goal of the club is to help students improve their speech by improving confidence and conciseness when speaking. Students will be able to experience debate competitions in the school this year and against other schools in the Ontario Student Debating Union competition in September 2022. The club is open for everyone in grades 9-12, as long as you are available to attend the meetings during 9/10 lunch on Tuesdays in room 230. As the time schedules change to align 9/10 lunch with 11/12 lunch, the club meetings will be easier for higher grades to attend. Participating in the weekly meetings is mandatory, but performance during competitions is optional.
