Friday, November 11th, marks the day we take every year to commemorate the honourable sacrifice made by the veterans of Canada: Remembrance Day.
Our school community gathered for a service in the auditorium. It featured fantastic performances by the dance team, drama classes, choir, and band. A moment of silence was held and the Last Post was played by a member of the school band. The highlight of the assembly was the informative presentation by Brigadier General Robert Ritchie about the present-day Canadian Armed Forces.
In future years, if you'd like to show your support, The Poppy Campaign is powered by the Royal Canadian Legion, a non-profit organization for Canadian veterans, and is always looking for volunteers to man the poppy stations at local grocery stores in the month of November. It’s a great way to gain community service hours and anyone who volunteers with the Legion has the opportunity to apply for a $1000 bursary for post-secondary education. A new addition to the Poppy Campaign that the Legion introduced this year is an online poppy that you can customize and dedicate to someone. You can visit it next year at MyPoppy.ca.
The Stittsville Legion also hosts a Remembrance Day poster and literary contest for grades 1-12 in November. Winners can earn a cash prize and have their work promoted to participate in the provincial contest.
Remembrance Day is a reminder to show our gratitude for those who gave their lives for our country, and an opportunity to learn more about our country’s history and the Canadian Armed Forces. Some helpful resources for both are the websites for the Canadian Encyclopedia, the Canadian Legion, and the Stittsville Legion.
