To answer the burning question that's surely plaguing us all, no, the Sacred Heart Huskies do not, in fact, cross countries. But, they are back! And working just as hard and running just as far, in the time since COVID-19 safety protocols forced the temporary suspension of our school sports. The speedy team run by Mrs. Ellis has two upcoming meets and they’ve been practicing lots to ensure their victory. Practices have been held Monday through Thursday every week after school since the third week of September. Each person is required to attend at least two practices per week where they run 6 km. Sacred Heart’s high school cross country team consists of over 20 students, and there is no experience required to join. There aren’t any try-outs; all you need to do in order to be on the team is attend practices and meets! The two meets for this season are on October 13 and 28. To compete in the latter, you have to have run on the thirteenth. The first meet will be for west end schools at Walter Baker Park in Kanata and the second will be for all Ottawa area schools at The Hornet’s Nest, in Gloucester. The run length at the meet is determined by your grade. For example, someone in grade 12 would run a different race than someone in grade 9. Unfortunately, they’re no longer taking new members but if you're interested in joining, you're encouraged to do so next year and have the opportunity to have lots of fun and make your school proud.
