Despite only 2 previous practices, the Sacred Heart Girls Hockey team finished up the season with 4 wins out of their 9 games, plus 2 ties. Their victory streak paid off and the team advanced to the OFSAA tournament in Windsor. They played hard and gave it their best effort but unfortunately, didn’t walk away with a medal. In the end, St. David won gold; Holy Cross, silver F.E. MADILL, bronze; and St. Mark, antique bronze.
Olivia Verge is this year’s team captain. She’s been playing hockey for around 12 years and speaks very highly of the sport, stating it’s “been her [whole] life”. Verge comments on the incredible teamwork and growth the team exhibited that resulted in their successes by saying;
“People were very nervous at the start, there were a lot of new faces, but it turned out way better than anyone expected”.
When asked about how the presence and energy of the spectators influence players’ mindset, she replied
“It definitely helps. The energy is so high. It’s still fun without spectators, but having that support pushes you harder.”
This not only relates to hockey but all sports. So Huskies, next time you hear about an upcoming home game, stop by to support your school because it really does help! Some habits that helped get the girls pumped up for a game were arriving early, stretching, and sometimes listening to specific upbeat songs.
The season has come to a wrap, but the spirit is still high. Committing to a sport like hockey requires commitment and instills healthy, transferable, life skills such as perseverance, hard work, teamwork and a good attitude. The girls did a great job this year, and everyone is excited for the next.
