Festive Fun at the Home Alone House

Stittsville family raises money for charity while raising Christmas cheer!

The ultimate Christmas fan Shawn Turcotte (and his family) are back with a new theme for the holiday spectacle around their house: the 1990 film, Home Alone.

Last December, Turcotte went all out transforming his house into the Griswolds’ from the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The decorations included 2,500 Christmas lights, an old station wagon with a Christmas tree, an old, dirty RV, and cardboard cutouts of some of the main characters. There were also tons of other details that fans of the movie would recognize, such as a burnt chair and a shopping cart filled with several different bags of dog food, and much more. His house was getting lots of attention, so Turcotte put out a donation box for the Stittsville Food Bank with a QR code to donate money online. Overall, they collected 2000 pounds of non-perishable food and over $22,000, which Mattamy Homes matched, creating a total of $45,000; this ended up being the largest donation to the Stittsville Food Bank ever!

This year, the Turcotte family hopes to build off last year’s success and make their Home Alone house even better. Some of the props they’ll include are the Little Nero’s Pizza car and a replica of the little statue it always knocks over, a terrarium and a fake tarantula that’s just like Buzz’s, a road salt garbage can with a shovel that Old Man Marley uses. They even have a replica of the Oh-Kay Plumbing and Heating van that the main antagonists use! Additionally, Turcotte and his friend will dress up as the “Wet Bandits”, Harry and Marv. This time, the funds will go to Youth Mental Health Services at CHEO. The goal is to raise $100,000. You can donate through their website, or at the house through the QR code or with cash at the home.

The lights come on and the fun begins on December 1st. You can visit the house at 18 Cypress Gardens in Stittsville.
